Case Study: Waterford Union High School - Livestreaming Graduation
Client Overview
When it comes to milestones in a student’s life, few moments are more significant than high school graduation. For Waterford Union High School, their ceremony isn’t just a celebration. It’s a tradition. Principal Dan Foster and his faculty take care to ensure a dignified event, giving students, staff, and family closure for years of hard work.
Our Initial Challenge
Like many schools nationwide, Waterford Union got caught up in the mess of 2020. With school closures, remote learning, and canceled in-person events, they were forced to rethink their traditional graduation ceremony.
While hosting an in-person event was still the goal, strict safety guidelines meant the gym couldn’t accommodate the usual number of guests.
The school needed a solution that would allow families–no matter where they were–to be part of the moment. Looking into the prospect of live streaming, Dan found Spoken Frame Media.
Our Project Objective
Our project objective was not only to capture the Waterford Union graduation but also to broadcast it via live stream to friends and family across the country. It was up to us to honor the significance of the day while adapting to imposed safety guidelines.
Our Approach
The day before production, we arrived early to set up our equipment and test everything to ensure the livestream would run smoothly.
We set up multiple cameras. With a video switcher, we were able to cut to different angles live, including shots of the podium, full stage, audience, band, and choir.
We managed multiple audio sources, including the podium mic, band and choir mics, and pre-recorded music. Plus, we actively mixed the audio to control the volume throughout the presentation.
Instead of wifi, we used a hardwired internet connection to avoid any dropouts. The livestream was broadcast to a private link on YouTube that was shared with family and faculty.
Whether families were in the gym, throughout the school, or across the country, we created an experience to bring people together.
Our Results
What started as a solution to an immediate problem became an ongoing partnership spanning four years and counting. Each school year, Spoken Frame Media continues to stream the Waterford Union graduation, ensuring everyone has access to this special moment.
Feedback from families has been overwhelmingly positive, with viewers appreciating the ability to clearly see students’ faces and hear their names as they cross the stage.
For Waterford Union High School, graduation is an epic event accessible to all. With Spoken Frame Media, they’ll continue to capture these memories and share them with families for years to come.
